🍏 The iBook G3 Lime, the colour of a digital revolution

There are objects that transcend their function, they become symbols. The iBook G3 Lime, part of Apple’s unforgettable “Clamshell” series, is one of them. Released in 1999, it wasn’t just a laptop. It was a statement… a declaration that computers could finally be fun, portable, and even beautiful. It perfectly brought the spirit (and some of the power) of the iMac G3 on the go.

Before aluminium unibody MacBooks ruled the Apple world, there was plastic: bright, translucent, unapologetically 2000s plastic. The iBook’s round curves and vibrant shell were designed by Jony Ive, the same visionary who later crafted the iMac G3 and the iPod. With its playful suitcase handle, rubberised edges, and the iconic Apple logo, it was Apple’s way of saying: the computer that has personality, for the people with personality.

I bought mine around 2004, when it was already becoming a relic, a charming dinosaur from a simpler digital age, especially for the 800x600px resolution. I first had the graphite grey version, elegant and serious. But the one I always wanted… was the lime green. The colour of optimism, of early Wi-Fi freedom (added via the AirPort Card!), of that turn-of-the-millennium energy when technology still felt like magic.

Even though by 2004 it was already showing its age, the iBook was still alive. You could surf the web, write, listen to music, burn a CD, and it still felt different. Holding it today feels like touching a time capsule: a bridge between the analogue warmth of the ’90s and the sleek digital minimalism that followed.
